No Atkins Diet Allowed!
Today we tested various foods for the presence of carbohydrates. There are 3 classes of carbs: monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. We used iodine as an indicator for the presence of starch, a polysaccharide. When added to the substance it will turn black when starch is present. Below is a sample of this data:
We also tested the food substances (honey, apple, beans, powdered sugar, table sugar, oats, and potato) for monosaccharides using Benedict's solution as the indicator. When heated Benedict's will turn orange in the presence of a simple sugar.
